Meaning “The Second” in Spanish, El Segundo is located on the Santa Monica Bay and is home to approximately 16,654. Incorporated in the year 1917, it was originally settled by the Tongva and Chumash Native American tribes, but has since become home to the Chevron Refinery. After explosive growth in population in the 1930s and the 1950s, industry and corporations looked to El Segundo for a workforce. The refinery, along with the Douglas Aircraft Company have become mainstays in the city, comprising much of El Segundo’s economy. While this has been a boon financially, it has also caused its share of environmental issues, and toxic waste cleanup remains a major goal of El Segundo. Along with being an industrial hub, El Segundo also serves as a major airline hub due to its proximity to the Los Angeles International Airport.
