Turlock is one of numerous cities throughout central California which traces its roots to the Railroad. After the Transcontinental Railroad completed running the final spike in Utah, spurs began to appear all over the west. When naming a stopping off point along one route, plans were made to name the place Turlough, after a city in Ireland.
