Modesto, CA – A 63-year-old Modesto man was killed and another driver was injured in a fiery crash on Highway 49 in Modesto Monday night.
The California Highway Patrol said the crash happened on the night of June 30 on Highway 49 near Sierra Rock Road.
According to CHP, a Modesto man was driving a GMC pickup truck southbound on Highway 49 when, for some reason, the truck crossed over the double yellow line and collided head-on with a northbound Chevrolet Silverado.
The truck driver was not wearing his seat belt and was “pinned in” as the truck caught fire.
Fire crews were able to put out the fire but the man died in the incident.
The driver of the Chevrolet, identified as 70-year-old Jan Ruff, sustained moderate injuries in the crash, CHP said, adding that Ruff was wearing a seat belt at the time in the crash.
Investigators suspect that drugs or alcohol may have been a factor in the crash, but an investigation is ongoing.
