, CA. – The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified the suspect who died in a police pursuit crash late Monday night at an intersection in San Diego as 16-year-old Edgar Giovanny Oviedo.

Officer Austin Machitar, 30, a five-year veteran of the department, also died in the crash, and Officer Zachary Martinez was hospitalized in critical condition.

The double fatal collision was reported just after 11:30 p.m. near Clairemont Boulevard and Doliva Drive.

The San Diego Police Department said officers observed a BMW sedan traveling at a high rate of speed and attempted a traffic stop.

The driver failed to yield, and the officers started a chase.

The pursuit was called off shortly after it had started, but the suspect car collided with the side of the patrol vehicle. Several other civilian vehicles were also involved in the accident.

Officer Machitar was driving the police vehicle and died in the crash.

Officer Martinez was a passenger in the patrol car and sustained severe injuries. He was hospitalized in critical condition.

The suspect, Oviedo, also died from the injuries he sustained in the collision. He was pronounced dead at 12:11 a.m. Tuesday in Sharp Memorial Hospital, as per the Medical Examiner.

San Diego, CA. – Austin Machitar, 30, has been identified as the San Diego Police Department officer who was killed in a car crash on Monday night in Clairemont.

The fatal collision happened around 11:30 p.m. in the area of 5200 Clairemont Mesa Boulevard, according to the SDPD.

A vehicle had been observed traveling down Clairemont Mesa Boulevard at a high rate of speed when a short pursuit ensued.

Moments later, the suspect crashed into a patrol car with two officers inside.

Several other civilian vehicles were involved in the accident.

Officer Machitar, a five-and-a-half-year veteran of the department, was killed in the accident.

The suspect also died in the collision.

Officer Zachary Martinez suffered serious injuries and was hospitalized in critical condition.

An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
