Congress, AZ. – One person died in a fiery traffic collision that happened Thursday morning in Congress, northwest of Phoenix, the Arizona Department of Transportation said.
The accident was reported just before 8 a.m. on US 93 at milepost 179 near Alamos Road.
Authorities said a box truck was traveling northbound on the highway when, for an unknown reason, veered across the centerline and collided head-on into a commercial vehicle heading southbound. Two other commercial vehicles were also involved in the accident. The box truck caught fire after the impact.
The driver of the box truck was pronounced dead at the scene by responding firefighters.
The fire spread to nearby brush but was contained by the firefighters.
Northbound US 93 was closed at State Route 71 and southbound US 93 at Interstate 40 following the collision.

Congress, AZ – At least one person was injured in a multi-vehicle collision near Congress on Thursday morning, according to the Arizona Department of Transportation.
The accident took place on US 93 near State Route 71.
Commercial vehicles were among the vehicles involved in the accident that caused one of them to roll over and burst into flames.
There were reports of major injuries in the incident.
A large section of US 93 was shut down as authorities investigated the incident.
The investigation is ongoing.
