Sedona, Arizona (September 18, 2023) – One of the drivers killed in a traffic crash near Sedona earlier this month has been identified as Margarito “Ito” Hernandez, 35, of Camp Verde, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
The head-on collision occurred just after midnight September 5, on State Route 179 south of the Village of Oak Creek.
Authorities said a 17-year-old Chino Valley boy was driving a Honda Fit northbound on SR 179 when he drifted into the opposite lane and collided head-on with an oncoming GMC Sierra driven by Hernandez.
The two drivers died at the scene while a passenger in the GMC Sierra was taken to Verde Valley Medical Center in Cottonwood with minor injuries.
According to the report, Hernandez was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
Impairment is believed to be a factor in the incident, which remained under investigation.
