Nipomo, CA. – A man died, and another was arrested after a multi-vehicle pileup that happened early Sunday morning on Highway 101 in Nipomo, the California Highway Patrol said.
The accident occurred around 2 a.m. near the southbound Highway 166 off-ramp.
CHP received 911 calls about a car rollover, with the vehicle blocking the highway lanes.
About ten minutes later, several motorists were stopped near the crash scene of the overturned vehicle and 20-year-old Dylan Lossing, of Orcutt, was driving his vehicle at a high rate of speed, approaching the area.
Police said a 2012 Nissan Altima driven by a 30-year-old Santa Maria man was stopped in the area directly behind a black GMC Sierra driven by Leticia Fernandez, 53, of Bakersfield also stopped from the rollover crash.
Lossing was unable to slow down in time for the stopped traffic ahead and crashed into the rear of the Nissan. The force of the impact pushed the Nissan into Fernandez's GMC Sierra.
Lossing's Altima deflected onto the dirt median and collided with a Chrysler Pacifica driven by 61-year-old Trisha Norris of Santa Maria.
The Santa Maria man driving the Altima was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center for treatment. He later died from his injuries in the facility.
Lossing, Fernandez, and two other people were treated for their injuries at the scene.
Police arrested Lossing on suspicion of impaired driving. He was booked into the San Luis Obispo County Jail. He faces charges of DUI causing injury, a DUI of .08 or above with injury, and manslaughter and gross negligence.
Fog was also mentioned as another factor that contributed to the accident.
