San Joaquin County, CA. – A man died, and five others, including a child, were injured in a multi-vehicle accident that happened Saturday afternoon in Vernalis, the California Highway Patrol said.
The pileup was reported around 12:57 p.m. on State Route 132 near River Road.
A preliminary investigation revealed that just before the crash, a 26-year-old Ceres man was driving a 2001 Honda sedan eastbound on SR-132.
Hector Garcia was driving a 2012 Honda SUV west on SR-132, with Lizandro Castillo driving behind in a 2021 Toyota sedan. Behind the Toyota sedan was a 2004 Chevrolet van driven by Esther Yahaira, and behind the van was a 2011 Honda sedan driven by Abel Velasquez.
Authorities said the 26-year-old Ceres man veered left, partially crossing the double yellow lines, and his 2001 Honda sedan sideswiped Garcia's SUV. The Honda continued into the westbound lane and collided head-on with Castillo's 2021 Toyota sedan.
Yahaira braked to avoid a crash but the 2011 Honda sedan hit the rear of her van.
The Ceres man was pronounced dead at the scene.
An 11-month-old child in the Toyota sedan was airlifted to UC Davis Medical Center with serious injuries.
Four other people suffered unspecified injuries.
Authorities did not immediately determine the cause of the crash.
Investigators closed SR-132 between River Road and Gates Road following the crash. The highway was reopened by 3:10 p.m.
