Escondido, California (August 22, 2021) – The San Diego County Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the bicyclist who died after being struck by a vehicle Saturday night in Escondido as Jerry Eugene Torres, 53.

The deadly bicycle accident occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. Saturday, August 21 on Ronald Packard Parkway (78) near Centre City Parkway.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Torres was riding his bicycle on the westbound side of the freeway when he attempted to cross to the right shoulder from the center divider.

For unknown reasons, Torres was hit by a white Volvo sedan that was traveling at around 55 to 60 miles per hour in the No. 1 lane.

Bicyclist Killed in SR-78 Crash Identified

Torres was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver involved stopped and cooperated with the police.

The crash prompted the authorities to close all eastbound lanes.

No other details about the crash were immediately provided.

The accident remains under investigation.
