Templeton, CA. – The two people who were killed in a head-on collision in Templeton last week have been identified by the California Highway Patrol.
Helmut Stich, 83, and Karen Stich, 72, both of Paso Robles, died following the crash that took place on Highway 46 near Cholame Y shortly after midnight on July 23.
CHP said the couple was riding in a 2020 Hyundai on Highway 46 East when Helmut, who was driving the Hyundai, tried to overtake a tractor-trailer.
The Hyundai ended up colliding head-on with an oncoming 2005 Ford F-350 driven by Grant McKenzie, of San Diego.
The Stiches were both pronounced deceased at the scene.
McKenzie suffered major injuries and was transported to Adventist Health Sierra Vista Hospital in San Luis Obispo.
CHP said alcohol and drugs were not believed to have played a role in the crash.
The investigation is ongoing.
