Fernando Baca Killed, Gerald Rood and Trisha Talent Injured in Car Accident on Highway 30 in Columbia County

Columbia County, OR. – Fernando Sajid Ortega Baca, 25, of Deer Island was killed in a head-on collision on Highway 30 in Columbia County Tuesday morning.

According to the Oregon State Police, the incident was reported on Highway 30 near milepost 24 at around 4:53 a.m. October 8.

A preliminary investigation indicated an eastbound Toyota Supra, operated by Gerald George Rood, 82, of Warren, attempted to make a U-turn and enter the westbound lane.

The Toyota blocked the westbound lane during the U-turn and was struck by a westbound Chevrolet 3500, operated by Clifford James Scott Jr, 55, of Scappoose.

The collision caused the Chevrolet to cross into the eastbound lanes where it nearly collided head-on with an eastbound Subaru Forester, driven by Baca.

Baca was declared deceased at the scene. Scott Jr., and passenger, Trisha Marie Talent,55, of Forest Grove, suffered serious injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Rood reportedly suffered minor injuries.

The highway was impacted for approximately five hours during the on-scene investigation.

The incident remains under investigation.
