Police said a 2005 Pontiac GTO drove into southbound Interstate 5 from Portal Way when it lost control and hit the left side barrier. A 2006 Yamaha FJR1300 operated by Hayes failed to stop in time and hit the Pontiac.
Ferndale, Washington – Evan Hayes, 47, of Blaine, was killed in a traffic collision early Friday morning in Ferndale, according to the Washington State Patrol.
The collision happened at 2:38 a.m. on Interstate 5, just north of Portal Way.
Police said a 2005 Pontiac GTO drove into southbound Interstate 5 from Portal Way when it lost control and hit the left side barrier. A 2006 Yamaha FJR1300 operated by Hayes failed to stop in time and hit the Pontiac.
Hayes, who was in a helmet at the time, was rushed to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle where he succumbed to his injuries.
The Pontiac driver, Collin Cayo, 20, of Bellingham, and his Ferndale passengers Kyndra Risler, 18, and 20-year-old Eric Chavez-Garfias were taken to PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained in the crash.
A third passenger was also injured in the collision.
It was not immediately known if Cayo and his passengers were with seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Police believed that alcohol or drugs were factors in the collision.
An investigation is underway.
