One vehicle was traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of the freeway before crashing head-on into oncoming traffic
Benton County, Wash. – Two people were killed and two others were taken to the hospital after a wrong-way driver collided with oncoming traffic on 82 Freeway in Benton County early Sunday morning, according to Washington State Patrol.
The deadly crash happened around 2:20 a.m. Sunday, November 12, on Interstate 82 near milepost 99, just east of Benton City.
Troopers say an Audi RS3 was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes of the freeway before it collided head-on with a Chevy Silverado. The Silverado was then struck by two other vehicles – a pickup truck and an SUV.
Two people – the driver of the Audi and the driver of the Chevy Silverado – sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Both victims were pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the SUV and his passenger were taken to Kadlec Regional Medical Center in unknown condition.
Preliminary investigation showed that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the deadly crash.
Eastbound I-82 was shut down for several hours at the Benton City exit 96 as troopers investigated the incident and cleared the scene.
