The girl succumbed to her injuries at Lompoc Valley Medical Center
Lompoc, CA – An 11-year-old Santa Maria girl, who was among four people injured in a two-vehicle traffic collision on Highway 1 near Lompoc Sunday evening, is dead, according to the California Highway Patrol.
According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, the incident happened at about 5 p.m. on September 29 on Highway 1 at Santa Lucia Canyon Road, between Lompoc and Vandenberg Space Force Base.
Preliminary investigation revealed that a Toyota Camry, operated by Jose Alfred Gonzalez, 65, of Lompoc, was stopped on Santa Lucia Canyon Road at the intersection with Highway 1, and was preparing to make a left turn.
As the Camry entered the intersection, it was hit on the left side by a Toyota Prius heading southbound on Highway 1.
A passenger in a Camry, only identified as an 11-year-old Santa Maria girl, was transported to Lompoc Valley Medical Center. CHP confirmed Monday that the girl later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Prius, Shane Giles, 21, of Lompoc, was taken to Marian Regional Medical Center with major injuries.
Gonzalez and another passenger, 59-year-old Luz Maria Gonzalez of Lompoc, were also transported to Marian Regional Medical Center with minor injuries.
Highway 1 was shut down for more than an hour as officers investigated the incident.
The circumstances surrounding the accident remain under investigation.
