California Highway Patrol officers and Los Angeles County firefighters responded to the scene.
The responders found about four or five cars involved in the accident.
The firefighters pronounced one person dead at the scene.
Another person was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

All southbound lanes of the interstate were closed during the investigation. Traffic was being diverted off the freeway at Avalon Boulevard.
