Philip Markle Dies in Baker County Rear-End Collision on Interstate 84
Baker County, Oregon (October 24, 2023) – 19-year-old Philip Wayne Markle of Nampa was killed in a car crash on Thursday night in Baker County.
According to the Oregon State Police, the incident occurred at around 9:40 p.m. October 19 on Interstate 84 near milepost 293.
Reportedly, an eastbound Mitsubishi Mirage, operated by Rebecca Anne Markle, 43, of Caldwell, was in the slow lane when it struck the rear end of a Peterbilt commercial motor vehicle and trailer.
The Mitsubishi sustained major damage in the crash.
Wayne Markle, who was the passenger in the Mitsubishi, was declared dead at the scene.
The operator of the Mitsubishi, Rebecca Markle, and a female juvenile, 16, suffered severe injuries and were rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Neither passenger in the Mitsubishi wore a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
The Peterbilt driver, Victor Maldonado, 44, of Fruitland, was not injured in the collision.
The highway was impacted for approximately one hour during the on-scene investigation. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
OSP was assisted by the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker Ambulance, Life Flight, and ODOT.
An investigation is underway.
