La Mesa, CA – The San Diego County Coroner's Office has identified a driver and a passenger killed in a Sunday evening crash on 8 Freeway in La Mesa as 79-year-old James Josef Allina and Rosalyn Gay Allina, both La Mesa residents.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported on the eastbound Interstate 8 west of Fletcher Parkway at around 7:19 p.m. February 10.
A preliminary investigation revealed Josef was driving a Toyota sedan eastbound with Rosalyn Allina as the front seat passenger on the freeway when for unknown reasons, the sedan was stopped with its lights out in the number three lane of traffic.
A Dodge SUV struck the sedan from the rear followed by a Kia sedan striking the rear of the Dodge SUV. Josef's vehicle was pushed into the number one lane of traffic.
Josef was pronounced dead at the scene while his wife, Rosalyn, was rushed to Sharp Memorial Hospital, where she died upon arrival.
No further information about the mishap was reported.
An investigation is ongoing.

San Diego, CA. – Two people were killed in a car crash in the La Mesa area of San Diego on Monday night.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the accident happened around 7:20 p.m. on eastbound I-8 near Lake Murray Boulevard.
A car with two people inside was stopped on the freeway after breaking down and was rear-ended by another car.
Two people in the disabled car were killed in the accident.
