Sacramento, CA – Two people were transported to a hospital with injuries following a two-vehicle collision on State Route 51 in Sacramento on Monday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The crash took place around 3:45 PM on January 19, 2026, on State Route 51 South, at SR-50. CHP and fire units responded to reports of a collision involving two vehicles in the southbound lanes approaching U.S. 50.
CHP logs indicate a green Honda CR-V and a white Toyota Tacoma were involved in the crash, with the Honda CR-V sustaining damage to the center drive area and the Toyota Tacoma showing major front-end damage. Fire crews reported vehicles positioned near the right-hand shoulder (RHS) of the roadway after impact.
Both occupants, a husband and wife, were assessed at the scene and subsequently transported to UC Davis Medical Center by fire department personnel from Engine #4 for care of their injuries. The extent of their injuries beyond transport was not detailed in early reports, and no arrests were reported.
The collision appears to have occurred as the two vehicles made contact in the southbound travel lanes; specifics of fault and contributing factors have not yet been established by authorities.
Emergency responders, including CHP and fire personnel, worked to secure the scene, assist the injured, and clear the roadway. Tow trucks were requested to remove both the Honda CR-V and the Toyota Tacoma from the scene.
The crash briefly affected traffic on southbound SR-51, with responders slowing lanes as needed to allow access for medical transport and scene management before normal flow was restored.
The incident remains under investigation by the CHP as officers continue to determine the cause of the collision and compile a full report.
Recent official data show ongoing progress and persistent challenges in road safety both in California and nationally. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), traffic fatalities in California dropped nearly 11% from 4,539 in 2022 to 4,061 in 2023, with decreases in many key categories, including unrestrained occupant and motorcycle deaths, as well as pedestrian and bicycle fatalities. California’s fatality rate per 100 million miles traveled also declined to 1.26 in 2023. Meanwhile, early estimates from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) indicate that U.S. traffic fatalities continue trending downward into 2025, with projections showing a decline in the first half of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, and traffic fatality rates falling to historically low levels in recent years despite increases in vehicle miles traveled.
