Salinas, CA – A woman is dead after being involved in a vehicle vs bicycle accident on Saturday in Salinas, according to a report by the California Highway Patrol.
Three vehicles were involved in the collision on Davis Road near Central Avenue on Saturday, March 14.
According to the CHP officers, a woman on a bike was heading south on Davis Road when she was struck by a truck that was also traveling south. The rider was then hit by two other vehicles.
The woman sadly died following the accident. She has since been identified by the Monterey County Coroner’s Office as Linda Theresse Munoz, 63, of Salinas.
The investigators reported that alcohol or drugs were not believed to have been factors in the collision. Munoz was reportedly wearing dark clothing when the incident happened.
The involved motorists, who were not immediately identified, stayed at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement. The California Highway is handling the ongoing investigation.
Salinas, being the county seat of Monterey County, largely contributes to the high number of accidents in the county yearly. There were 2,362 people killed or injured in fatal and injury-related traffic accidents in Monterey County in 2022, according to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS). 84 victims were injured or killed while riding bikes, and 151 victims were on foot. Nearly 10% of the traffic-related injuries that year were suffered by non-vehicle operators. Pedestrian and bicyle collisions have risen in general in California since 2014 and peaked between 2021 and 2023, highlighting the need for more empasis on pedestrian and bicycle rider safety. There is need for continued sensitization and introduction of stringent measures to help curb the rising cases of traffic-related injuries and fatalities.
