Walnut Creek, CA – At least one person was seriously injured in a multi-vehicle crash on the South Main Street on-ramp to Interstate 680 in Walnut Creek Saturday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred on the South Main Street on-ramp to southbound Interstate 680 at approximately 7:54 p.m.
Preliminary reports indicate the crash involved three vehicles, including a white sedan and a black Chevrolet four-door vehicle. Dispatch information suggested that one of the drivers had traveled up the on-ramp prior to the collision.
During the crash, at least one vehicle reportedly left the roadway and came to rest about 20 feet off the road in a grassy area near the ramp. Authorities said at least one person sustained severe injuries in the collision.
The number of additional injuries was not immediately confirmed, and the identities of those involved have not been released. Units from the California Highway Patrol responded to the scene along with personnel from the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District to provide emergency assistance and secure the area.
The crash partially blocked the slow lane and the on-ramp for a period of time, causing traffic disruptions in the area as crews worked to clear the vehicles and investigate the incident.
The Walnut Creek crash remains under investigation by authorities.
