Walnut Creek, CA – One person was killed, and several others were injured in a wrong-way traffic collision involving multiple vehicles on the 680 Freeway in Walnut Creek.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened at around 11:20 p.m. on the northbound Interstate 680 just north of Treat Boulevard.
Responding crews located seven vehicles at the crash site, including a Dodge Charger, a white sedan, and a Toyota Prius.
Investigators determined that the driver of the Dodge, a woman, was driving southbound in the northbound lanes when she collided with six other vehicles.
A passenger in one of the vehicles heading north was pronounced dead at the scene. The wrong-way driver and three other people suffered serious injuries. Three other individuals also sustained minor injuries.
The wrong-way driver was later determined to have been under the influence at the time of the incident. The woman was placed under arrest, but remains hospitalized.
At least four tow trucks were requested for the scene to tow away the involved vehicles.
The freeway was shut down for several hours during the on-site investigation.
No further information about the crash was available.
Authorities are investigating to determine the cause of the accident.
