Long Beach crash statistics show ongoing challenges, with recent data highlighting significant pedestrian fatalities, including many in crosswalks and felony hit-runs, alongside factors like speeding, impaired driving (drugs/alcohol), and vulnerable users (pedestrians, cyclists, young drivers) being key contributors to injuries and deaths, though efforts are focused on reducing these numbers through education, enforcement, and engineering, aiming for goals like “Zero Fatalities”.

Key Trends & Issues include:

Pedestrian Safety: This is a major concern, with many recent crashes involving pedestrians, some occurring when they had the right-of-way in crosswalks, and a notable number of felony hit-and-runs.

Impaired Driving: Drug and alcohol impairment remains a significant factor in crashes, with OTS funding programs to improve detection and prosecution.

Speed: Unsafe speed is a contributing factor, though sometimes less dominant than other causes like pedestrian behavior.

Vulnerable Road Users: Young drivers, cyclists, and motorcyclists are disproportionately affected, with high increases in fatalities among young motorcyclists noted statewide.
