In the City of Corona, traffic safety data reveals both improvements and persistent challenges between 2018 and 2022. The total number of injury-causing traffic crashes decreased over a five-year span (from 2,213 to 2,086), but a worrying trend emerged in fatal collisions, which increased significantly by 67% in 2022 compared to 2018 (35 fatal crashes in 2022 versus 21 in 2018). Alcohol and drug-related incidents remain a substantial issue, accounting for 13 of the 35 fatal crashes within those five years. Overall, approximately 786 crashes between 2018 and 2022 involved alcohol and/or drugs, with 15 resulting in fatalities and about 235 causing injury. Collisions involving vulnerable road users, specifically pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists, are also a major concern. Between 2018 and 2022, there were a total of 466 crashes involving these groups, including 203 pedestrian-related crashes, 120 bicycle-related crashes, and 143 motorcycle-related crashes. Recent data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) indicates some improvement in rankings relative to other cities of similar size (population 100,001-250,000) for 2023. In 2023, Corona recorded 493 total victims killed and injured in collisions, earning a ranking of 50 out of 62 cities, suggesting better performance than many peer cities in that specific year.
