Authorities said a 20-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet southbound on Highway 99 at a high rate of speed, and allowed the car to veer onto the west shoulder, where it crashed into a metal guardrail

Bakersfield, CA – Two people were killed and two others were injured after a car crashed on Highway 99 in Bakersfield late Friday night.
The deadly crash happened on August 8, just after 11 p.m. on Highway 99 near South Union Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Authorities said a 20-year-old man was driving a Chevrolet southbound on Highway 99 at a high rate of speed, and allowed the car to veer onto the west shoulder, where it crashed into a metal guardrail.
Upon the impact, the Chevrolet went out of control and crashed in the south Union Avenue overcrossing, before coming to rest on the west shoulder, obstructing the number three lane of the highway.
A passenger in the car was ejected during the crash.
Police said the passenger was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision.
The driver and the ejected passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other passengers were hospitalized with serious injuries.
No additional details were provided.
The crash remains under investigation.
