Los Angeles, CA – Two people were injured Wednesday afternoon in a two-vehicle traffic collision that left one person trapped inside a vehicle in Tujunga, authorities said.
The crash was reported at approximately 12:42 p.m., December 31, in the 6200 block of West Honolulu Avenue near La Tuna Canyon Road, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Crews arrived to find a two-car collision with one occupant trapped inside a vehicle.
Firefighters initiated extrication efforts to safely free the trapped individual. Paramedics evaluated two patients at the scene before transporting them to a local hospital for treatment. The patients’ ages, genders, and conditions were not immediately available.
Los Angeles Police Department officers also responded to the scene and assisted with traffic control and the ongoing investigation.
The incident remains under investigation by authorities.
Los Angeles consistently records a high volume of traffic collisions, leading the state in total accidents, though recent data indicates a downward trend in the number of victims injured or killed. According to California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data, the city of Los Angeles had 8,944 victims killed and injured in 2022, a significant decrease from a peak of over 36,000 in 2018. In terms of OTS rankings (where a lower rank indicates a worse safety record among 15 similar-sized cities), Los Angeles improved substantially, moving from a rank of 1/15 in both 2018 and 2019 to 14/15 by 2022. This improvement suggests that while the absolute number of crashes remains high due to population density, safety initiatives and vehicle technology may be reducing the severity of outcomes. Primary causes of accidents in Los Angeles County include speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Pedestrians and cyclists remain particularly vulnerable, accounting for a disproportionate number of serious injuries and fatalities. In 2023, 336 people died in traffic-related crashes in the city, with 179 of those victims being pedestrians.
