Tracy, CA – One person was killed and at least three others were hurt in a head-on collision that occurred near Tracy on Thursday evening, the California Highway Patrol reported.
At about 6:35 p.m. December 18, the Stockton Communications Center reported a crash on Highway 33, just north of Vernalis Road.
According to the report, a silver 2013 Chevrolet truck was heading southeast on SR 33 when it drifted into the northwesterly side and collided head-on with an oncoming black 2010 Ford Transit van.
The driver of the Ford had fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The driver was only identified as an adult male.
A woman and child riding in the Ford had major injuries and were transported to San Joaquin General Hospital for treatment. The driver of the Chevrolet, an adult male, was taken to Doctors' Medical Center with minor injuries.
DUI is not suspected to have played a role in the incident, according to CHP. An investigation into the incident is still ongoing.
According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the city of Tracy saw a slight decrease in total fatal and injury collisions from 2021 to 2022, though specific problem areas persist. In the 2022 reporting period, Tracy recorded 241 total victims killed and injured in collisions, which gave it an OTS ranking of 71 out of 104 similar-sized cities. This was down from 260 total victims in 2021. A significant portion of these incidents involved specific contributing factors. In 2022, there were 24 alcohol-involved collisions, ranking Tracy 75th in this category. Motorcycle collisions resulted in eight victims, while pedestrian and bicyclist incidents accounted for 16 and 12 victims, respectively. While the total number of incidents improved, the state as a whole continues to address a road safety crisis, with unsafe speed often accounting for nearly a third of all crashes statewide.
