Stockton, CA – One person was killed, and three others were injured following a head-on collision on State Route 4 near Stockton Saturday afternoon, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash occurred at about 12:17 p.m. on State Route 4 west of John Turk Road.
According to the CHP, a Kia sedan driven by a 38-year-old Stockton man was traveling eastbound on SR-4 when, for some reason, it crossed over lane delineators and entered the westbound lane. A westbound Tesla, driven by a 51-year-old man, attempted to avoid the collision by veering left, but the Kia reportedly swerved back toward the right and collided head-on with the Tesla.
The impact caused the Kia to become airborne before it landed in a drainage ditch south of the roadway. The Kia driver was found unconscious and trapped inside the vehicle. Stockton firefighters extricated the man from the wreckage and performed life-saving measures before transporting him to San Joaquin General Hospital. The 38year-old man was pronounced dead at approximately 1:21 p.m. at the hospital. Authorities have not yet publicly released his identity pending notification of next of kin.
The Tesla driver and two juvenile passengers suffered moderate injuries in the crash. Authorities said all three declined medical treatment at the scene. No arrests were reported.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. CHP officials said it is currently unknown whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash.
California Highway Patrol officers and Stockton fire crews responded to the scene to assist victims and investigate the collision.
