Shafter, CA – Driver Dies After Car Slams Into Semi-Truck on Highway 43 South of Shafter

Shafter, CA – One person was killed following a two-vehicle crash involving a passenger car and a semi-truck early Friday morning near Shafter, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred at approximately 4:56 a.m. on Friday, March 6, 2026, on Highway 43 near Orange Street, just south of Shafter.

According to a preliminary investigation, a man was driving a 2009 Toyota Corolla southbound on Highway 43, north of Orange Street, at an undetermined speed. Ahead of the Corolla, a 42-year-old Shafter man was operating a 2020 Freightliner Cascadia pulling double trailers, traveling southbound at approximately 15 to 20 miles per hour.

Investigators said that, for reasons still being determined, the Toyota driver failed to slow down and rear-ended the back of the Freightliner. The impact caused severe front-end damage to the Corolla, and the vehicle subsequently caught fire, leaving the driver trapped inside.

The driver of the Toyota Corolla died as a result of the crash, authorities confirmed. The identity of the victim has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. No other injuries were immediately reported.

Officials said it is not yet known whether alcohol or drugs played a role in the collision.

Emergency responders closed both northbound and southbound lanes of Highway 43 near Orange Street for approximately two and a half hours while crews worked at the scene and investigators documented the crash.

The Shafter crash remains under investigation, and additional details may be released as authorities continue their review of the incident.

Crash Statistics

Fatal crashes remain a serious concern across California roadways. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the state recorded 4,428 traffic fatalities in 2022, with rear-end collisions and crashes involving large trucks accounting for a portion of those deaths. Data compiled through the California Highway Patrol’s Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS) shows that high-speed rural highways often see severe crashes due to speed differences between passenger vehicles and commercial trucks.
