San Luis Obispo County, CA – Gemma Salting Dies after Equipment Falls Off Trailer, Hits Her Truck on Highway 41

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported around 6:55 a.m. on August 12, 2026, on Highway 441.

San Luis Obispo County, CA – 58-year-old Gemma Salting of Atascadero died in a Highway 41 crash after equipment dislodged from another vehicle’s trailer and hit her vehicle Wednesday morning in San Luis Obispo County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident was reported around 6:55 a.m. on August 12, 2026, on Highway 441.

Authorities reported that Phil Peterson was heading northbound on the highway towing a trailer when a large piece of equipment dislodged from the trailer into the southbound lane.

At that time, Salting was driving her truck in the southbound lane and collided with the equipment, causing her to lose control of the vehicle and go down an embankment before hitting a tree.

Peterson continued to drive after the incident until he safely turned around and returned to the scene.

CHP officers, Cal Fire, the Atascadero Police Department, and Morro Bay Police Department responded to the scene.

The firefighters extricated Salting from her vehicle and pronounced her dead at the scene at 7:37 a.m.

Authorities are investigating the collision.
