, CA. – A man was killed in a crash near Morro Bay that happened on October 20, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred near Bear Ridge Road when a vehicle driven by 47-year-old David Winfrey veered off the roadway, plunged about 350 feet down an embankment, and caught fire.

First responders pronounced Winfrey dead at the scene.

The accident prompted a temporary road closure as officials worked to recover the vehicle and investigate the scene.

Winfrey's family opened a GoFundMe account to help them raise funds for his funeral.

Morro Bay, CA. — A driver was killed late Monday night after a car veered off Highway 41, plunged down an embankment, and caught fire in Morro Bay, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash happened around 10:45 p.m. near Bear Ridge Road between and Morro Bay.

Investigators said the driver of a 2003 Chrysler PT Cruiser lost control of the vehicle while driving southbound, went off the road, and tumbled roughly 350 feet before the vehicle ignited.

Responding emergency personnel pronounced the driver dead at the scene.

No other occupant was in the car.

It's unclear whether alcohol or drugs were contributing factors.
