Investigators reported that a driver in a black Mercedes-Benz failed to stop at a traffic stop and fled heading east in the southbound lanes of Interstate 8. The Mercedes-Benz then crashed into multiple vehicles before coming to a stop.
San Diego, CA – Several people were hurt in a collision involving a wrong-way driver on Interstate 8 in the College Area on Wednesday morning, according to the San Diego Police Department.
The accident transpired shortly before 10:45 a.m. on July 1, at the southbound College Avenue on-ramp to I-8.
Investigators reported that a driver in a black Mercedes-Benz failed to stop at a traffic stop and fled heading east in the southbound lanes of Interstate 8. The Mercedes-Benz then crashed into multiple vehicles before coming to a stop.
San Diego Police Department officers and the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department arrived shortly after and attended to several parties involved in the collision.
Four patients were then transferred to the hospital for further treatment. Two of the injured people were reportedly hospitalized with critical injuries but the condition of the other patients was not specified.
The driver of the Mercedes-Benz was taken into custody at the site of the collision.
The southbound College Avenue ramp to westbound I-8 was temporarily shut down as authorities worked to clear the scene.
There were no additional details on the accident. The San Diego Police Department is handling an ongoing investigation into the incident.
