Rainier, OR – Authorities are investigating a head-on collision that left a 23-year-old driver deceased and another severely injured west of Rainier on Monday evening.
The two-vehicle crash, according to the Oregon State Police, happened on Highway 30 near milepost 51 at around 7 p.m. on February 9.
An nvestigation revealed that Lorenza Gaspar-Mateo, 34, of Longview, Washington, was driving eastbound on Highway 30 when he drifted into the path of oncoming traffic.
Gaspar-Mateo’s car collided head-on with a westbound vehicle that was being driven by Alissa Jenay Jarvis, 23, of Astoria. It’s still unclear why Gaspar-Mateo moved out of his lane.
The OSP reported that Jarvis was pronounced deceased at the scene of the collision. Gaspar-Mateo was transported by medics to a hospital and was listed in serious condition.
No charges have been made in connection with the crash, though authorities noted that DUI and lane safety were determined to have played a role in the accident. At this time, it has not been specified which driver was suspected of DUI.
As authorities worked at the scene, both sides of Highway 30 were shut down. The closure lasted for almost five hours before the highway was reopened.
The Oregon State Police is still conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
