Oro Grande, CA – George Butterfield Killed in Motorcycle Crash on National Trails Highway

San Bernardino County, CA – A motorcyclist was killed following a head-on collision involving a motorcycle and a passenger vehicle in Oro Grande Saturday evening, according to the Victorville Police Department.

The fatal crash occurred on National Trails Highway near Wilderness Court at approximately 6:24 p.m. on February 7, 2026.

Investigators said the collision involved a black motorcycle and a white Mazda 3 sedan. Preliminary information released by authorities indicated that the motorcycle, operated by George Butterfield, a 71-year-old resident of Helendale, was traveling northbound on National Trails Highway when it lost control.

Police reported that the motorcycle crossed into the oncoming lanes and collided head-on with the southbound Mazda.

Butterfield was transported from the scene by ambulance but later died from his injuries. The driver of the Mazda was also taken to a hospital for treatment, though their condition has not been disclosed. No arrests have been reported in connection with the crash.

Deputies with the Victorville Police Department responded alongside the Victorville Fire Department and emergency medical personnel to assist victims and secure the scene.

The crash forced the closure of both directions of National Trails Highway for approximately three hours while members of the department’s Major Accident Investigation Team conducted a full investigation.

The deadly motorcycle collision remains under investigation, and authorities are asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has relevant information to contact the Victorville Police Department.

Motorcyclists face unique risks on the road due to limited protection compared to vehicles. Riders should always wear helmets, follow traffic laws, and stay visible to other drivers. Drivers are urged to watch for motorcycles, especially at night or in low-light conditions, and maintain safe distances to prevent serious collisions.
