California Motorcycle Accident Trends (Recent Years)
Motorcycle crashes remain a serious road safety concern across California. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), there were 583 motorcyclist fatalities in 2023 — a 10.2% reduction from 649 deaths in 2022. Helmet-related fatalities also dropped, with rider deaths among those not wearing helmets falling from 43 in 2022 to 33 in 2023.
Despite that drop in fatalities, motorcycles still account for a disproportionately large share of serious and fatal traffic crashes statewide. Over the 2020–2024 period, motorcycle involved crashes made up roughly 21% of all fatal or serious injury crashes in California. Unsafe speed and improper turns remain among the most common underlying factors contributing to these severe incidents.
