Montebello, CA – A pedestrian was critically injured Saturday evening after being struck by a Montebello police vehicle while walking in a marked crosswalk, authorities said.

The incident occurred around 5:38 p.m. as officers from the Montebello Police Department were responding to a report of a possible DUI driver near Montebello Boulevard and Victoria Avenue.

According to police, one patrol unit was traveling eastbound on Beverly Boulevard at Howard Avenue when the collision happened.

The California Highway Patrol, which is handling the investigation, said the patrol vehicle entered the intersection as the pedestrian was walking in the crosswalk. Investigators stated that the officer driving the vehicle swerved in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian but was unable to do so.

The pedestrian was transported to a local hospital with major injuries. CHP said the victim remained in critical but stable condition as of Monday afternoon.

The officer driving the patrol vehicle was also taken to a hospital with minor injuries after the police car struck a pole following the collision, according to investigators.

CHP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
