Long Beach, CA – A motorcyclist was killed in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 405 in Long Beach early Tuesday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatal collision occurred at about 6:53 a.m. on the southbound 405 Freeway just north of Long Beach Boulevard.

Preliminary reports indicate the motorcycle was involved in a collision with a van in the HOV lane. The motorcyclist was reportedly down in the No. 1 lane following the impact. Emergency callers indicated the motorcycle became separated from the rider, and at one point, the rider was not immediately visible. A blue Honda and other vehicles were stopped in the area, though some were later determined not to have been involved in the collision.

The motorcyclist sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released pending notification of next of kin. There were no immediate reports of other serious injuries.

The Long Beach Fire Department responded to the scene shortly after the crash was reported. CHP officers coordinated a hard closure of the southbound HOV and No. 1 and No. 2 lanes. An evidence tow was requested, and additional units were dispatched to manage traffic on both sides of the freeway.

A SigAlert was issued at 7:23 a.m. for the southbound 405 Freeway just north of Long Beach Boulevard, initially expected to last two hours. The closure was later extended for an additional two hours as crews conducted the on-scene investigation. Northbound lanes were also temporarily blocked, including the No. 4 lane and a transition lane, causing significant traffic delays through the 710 split and surrounding areas. The roadway was eventually cleared on the northbound side while the southbound closure remained in effect.

The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
