Tucson, AZ – A third student has died following a hit-and-run accident that left two University of Arizona students dead on Thursday night in Tucson.
According to Tucson police, Katya Rosaura Castillo-Mendoza, 21, was confirmed deceased on November 1 by the Medical Examiner.
The crash took place at about 11:00 p.m. October 30, in the area of East Second Street and Euclid Avenue near the campus.
According to investigators, Louis John Artal, 19, was driving a 2019 Porsche Boxster at a high rate of speed northbound on Euclid Avenue when he collided with the three pedestrians walking in a marked crosswalk at East Second Street.
Two of the victims, identified as Sophia Akimi, 21, and Josiah Santos, 22, died at the scene.
Castillo-Mendoza was the third pedestrian and died at a hospital.
Artal fled the scene after the crash but went to report to the Tucson Police Department on Friday morning.
Impairment, speed, and failure to yield to pedestrians in a crosswalk were believed be the major factors in the crash.
Police reported that Artal is facing three counts of 2nd degree murder and one count of leaving the scene of an accident involving death.
The investigation is ongoing.
