Bakersfield, CA– A man was killed Friday night in a bicycle collision in Bakersfield, according to authorities.
The deadly collision occurred at approximately 8:26 p.m. August 22, on Buena Vista Boulevard, west of Fairfax Road.
Authorities said the bicyclist, 42-year-old Justen Lay, was eastbound on Buena Vista and ahead of an eastbound 2007 Mitsubishi Endeavor, driven by a 48-year-old man.
According to investigators, the bicyclist was riding with no lighting equipment in the hours of darkness.
Due to poor lighting conditions and the bicyclist riding directly in the roadway, the Mitsubishi driver struck the bicyclist.
Lay was ejected from the bicycle and thrown into the westbound lane, where he was struck by the front left of a westbound 2018 Hyundai Accent, driven by a 28-year-old woman.
The bicyclist was pronounced dead at the scene while the two drivers remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.
CHP ruled suspected alcohol/drugs to be a leading factor in the deadly collision.
