Imperial County, CA – Three people were killed and two others injured in a multi-vehicle collision on State Route 111 in Imperial County on Monday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

At around 5:10 p.m. February 2, authorities were called to the scene of a collision on SR 111 north of McCabe Road.

A preliminary investigation determined that a 2007 Lincoln MKZ was traveling northbound on SR 111 when it drifted across the dirt center median into the southbound side, where it collided with a southbound 2020 Nissan Rogue. The Lincoln was then hit by a 2021 Honda Accord that was also traveling south.

Emergency crews immediately responded to the scene of the accident and located multiple parties involved in the accident.

The CHP confirmed that two occupants of the Nissan, a 57-year-old El Centro woman and a 51-year-old woman from Calexico, were both killed in the crash. The driver of the Lincoln, a 50-year-old El Centro man, was also killed in the collision.

The driver and passenger in the Honda were treated for minor injuries. The names of all involved parties were yet to be released.

Everyone involved in the accident was wearing their seatbelts. It’s unclear whether impairment was a factor in the accident.

California Intersection Accident Statistics

Intersection-related and multi-vehicle collisions remain a significant cause of fatalities in California. According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), nearly 40% of all traffic fatalities in the state occur at intersections, often involving left-turn or right-angle collisions. Older drivers are particularly vulnerable due to reduced reaction time and frailty, which increases the likelihood of serious injury or death even in low-speed impacts.

Statewide data from SafeTREC at UC Berkeley indicates that in 2022, California recorded over 1,200 fatalities from intersection collisions, highlighting the need for vigilance at cross streets, obeying traffic signals, and defensive driving practices to reduce risks in urban environments.
