Woman Dies, Boy Hospitalized after Pedestrian Accident in Hayward

Hayward, CA – A 59-year-old woman died, and a 6-year-old boy was hospitalized after they were struck by a vehicle Saturday evening at an intersection in Hayward.

Around 6:21 p.m. on February 14, officers responded to Tennyson Road and Baldwin Street after they were notified about a pedestrian accident.

The officers found the woman and the boy suffering from serious injuries. Paramedics responded and transported both victims to a nearby hospital. The woman later died from her injuries. The boy was treated for facial injuries and is expected to survive.

The 60-year-old Hayward man driving the car stopped and remained at the scene. Drugs and alcohol are not suspected to be contributing factors on his part.

Authorities are investigating to determine the cause of the collision.

SWITRS-derived California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) data over recent years show a moderate increase in serious pedestrian involvement in traffic collisions. In 2019, Hayward had 52 pedestrians killed or injured in fatal and injury collisions. That count dipped slightly to 51 in 2021, then rose to 41 in 2022, and further to 57 in 2023, placing the city in the upper tier for pedestrian victims among comparable California cities. Age subgroup data indicate that both children under 15 and older adults (65+) have been consistently represented in pedestrian victims, though the exact numbers fluctuated year-to-year.
