Rider Critically Hurt in Goleta Motorcycle Crash on Hollister Avenue and Coromar Drive

Goleta, CA – A motorcycle rider sustained major injuries in a collision with a vehicle on Hollister Avenue in Goleta on Monday afternoon.

According to the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Department, the accident was reported at around 4:45 p.m. February 23, at the intersection of Coromar Drive.

A preliminary investigation found that a BMW motorcycle and a Nissan Altima sedan collided in the westbound lanes of Hollister Avenue for undetermined reasons.

Deputies from the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office and the Santa Barbara County Fire Department crews immediately responded to the site of the collision.

The motorcyclist was discovered to have sustained major injuries and was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital for medical treatment. The identity of the injured rider was not immediately released.

The other involved driver was questioned by law enforcement and released. The driver was not hurt in the incident.

The motorcycle and the Nissan sustained major damage in the collision.

As authorities worked at the scene, the westbound lanes and one eastbound lane of Hollister Avenue were shut down until around 8 p.m.

The authorities have not released additional information on the collision, which is under investigation by the Santa Barbara County Sheriff’s Office.

According to the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), in 2021, Goleta reported a total of 137 victims killed and injured in all traffic collisions, which gave the city an OTS ranking of 18 out of 93 comparable cities. A notable area of concern was bicyclist safety, with 16 victims injured or killed in collisions, resulting in a high ranking of 7/93, indicating it was among the cities with the most significant issues in this category. Alcohol-involved collisions accounted for 11 victims killed or injured, and there were 10 pedestrian victims. The City of Goleta has used recent collision data (from 2019 and 2020) to inform its Local Road Safety Plan and systemic safety analyses to address these issues and secure grants for safety upgrades.
