Los Angeles County consistently records a high volume of traffic collisions and fatalities, making it one of the most dangerous counties in California for road users. Preliminary data for 2024 within the City of Los Angeles alone indicated approximately 28,916 reported crashes, resulting in 302 fatalities, averaging nearly 79 collisions and more than one death every day. This slight decline in deaths from a peak of 336 in 2023 is in line with a national downturn, though the numbers remain elevated compared to pre-pandemic years. Key trends highlight the extreme vulnerability of pedestrians and cyclists, who account for over one-third and a significant percentage of traffic deaths respectively, with their fatality numbers continuing to rise in contrast to overall declining figures. Major contributing factors to these incidents include driver error (over 90% of accidents), excessive speeding, impaired driving (alcohol and drugs), and distracted driving. The most dangerous times for crashes are typically weekday afternoons between 3 PM and 6 PM. Efforts to combat this crisis through initiatives like “Vision Zero Los Angeles County,” which aims to eliminate all traffic fatalities by 2035, have faced challenges, and so far have not reversed the overall increase in deaths since the program’s inception in 2015. The county continues to focus resources and safety enhancements on “Collision Concentration Corridors” and addressing high-risk behaviors, as traffic mortality rates have regrettably outpaced homicides in the city for the second consecutive year.
