Encino, CA – The person who was killed in a multi-vehicle crash on the 101 Freeway in Encino early Saturday morning has been identified, according to authorities.
Officials identified the deceased as 19-year-old Chaz Castillo.
The fatal collision occurred on the northbound 101 Freeway just south of White Oak Avenue at approximately 1:48 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.
Investigators said the crash began with a solo vehicle that became disabled in the No. 1 lane with its hazard lights on. Castillo reportedly exited the disabled vehicle moments before a second vehicle rear-ended it. A third vehicle then crashed into the first vehicle and the individual outside the vehicle. Â Two other vehicles were involved in the chain reaction.
Castillo was found trapped underneath a vehicle following the collision. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The number of additional injuries has not been fully detailed. No arrests have been reported.
Emergency responders, including Los Angeles Fire Department personnel and the coroner, responded to the scene and worked to rescue the victim and manage the incident.
The crash prompted a SigAlert at approximately 2:38 a.m., shutting down all northbound lanes of the 101 Freeway and diverting traffic to White Oak Avenue. The closure remained in effect for several hours before being lifted at approximately 8:57 a.m.
The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol.
