Data from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) shows that San Mateo County continues to face serious road safety challenges, frequently placing the county near the bottom when compared to other counties statewide. In 2023, the county reported a total of 3,333 people killed or injured in traffic-related crashes, earning a troubling 33 out of 58 in the OTS ranking. This marked a significant rise from 2022, when the county recorded 3,173 crash victims and ranked 34th statewide. Over time, San Mateo County has consistently exceeded both state and national averages for traffic collisions. A comprehensive five-year analysis revealed that the county's traffic fatality rate per 100,000 residents was nearly twice the national average and more than double California's overall rate.
