CHP Investigating Deadly 880 Freeway Crash in Oakland

Oakland, California (July 14, 2023) – One person died, and another was hospitalized after an 880 Freeway crash that happened early Friday morning and prompted a second collision that resulted in major injuries in Oakland.

The California Highway Patrol said the deadly collision occurred at around 1:44 a.m. on the southbound 880 Freeway, just north of 66th Avenue.

The crash involved about five vehicles.

Authorities said one person died in the accident, and another was hospitalized with unspecified injuries.

The cause of the collision was not mentioned.

CHP said as vehicles piled up due to the crash, a speeding driver crashed into the cars in traffic.

About ten vehicles were involved in the second collision.

At least one person in the second accident suffered major injuries, the report said.

The collisions forced the closure of traffic lanes for several hours.

CHP is investigating the incidents.
