A gold SUV and a black sedan were involved in the crash. The sedan came to rest facing the wrong direction across the middle lanes, while the SUV reportedly ended up on the right embankment.
At least one person was killed in the incident. The coroner was notified, and firefighters were requested to use a cutting tool to remove the body from a vehicle.
The crash prompted a full closure of northbound I-605 near SR-91. Traffic was diverted off South Street while crews worked at the scene, and some lanes were gradually reopened during the early morning hours.
The SigAlert was canceled at approximately 4:44 a.m., and the incident was closed shortly afterward.
The circumstances leading to the fatal crash remain under investigation.
