The fatal Big Bear crash occurred at approximately 7:07 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, on eastbound State Route 38 east of Green Way Drive.

Big Bear, CA – A Riverside man died after being struck by a hit-and-run driver while working inside a construction closure on State Route 38 in the Big Bear area Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The 90-year-old driver, identified as Donal Parker, was later arrested for hit-and-run. The deceased was identified by the San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office as 43-year-old Edgar Chavez.
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 7:07 a.m. Monday, August 31, 2026, on eastbound State Route 38 east of Green Way Drive.
According to CHP, Parker was driving a 2012 Toyota eastbound when he drove through the construction cone pattern and struck Edgar Chavez. Chavez was standing in the roadway within the closed construction area.
After striking Chavez, Parker continued eastbound on State Route 38 and left the scene. Chavez suffered major injuries and was treated at the scene by emergency personnel before being transported to Bear Valley Hospital, where he later died.
CHP arrested Parker at about 2:45 p.m. Monday in the 41600 block of Mockingbird in Big Bear Lake.
Investigators are still determining why Parker drove through the construction closure.
The crash closed the roadway as authorities investigated the scene. State Route 38 was reopened shortly before 3:30 p.m.
The fatal collision remains under investigation.
