Cerritos, CA – One person was killed early Tuesday morning after a gold SUV crashed into vehicles that had stopped in the left lane of northbound Interstate 605 near the State Route 91 interchange in Cerritos, according to the California Highway Patrol
Authorities reported the initial collision at approximately 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, October 6, 2026, on northbound I-605 just south of SR-91. Preliminary information indicates several vehicles were involved in the original crash and remained stopped in the left lane.
A tow truck had arrived at the scene when the gold SUV approached and struck the stopped vehicles at high speed. CHP said a tow truck driver was working near the vehicles before the impact. At least one person was killed in the incident. The coroner was notified, and firefighters were requested to use a cutting tool to remove the body from a vehicle.
The crash prompted a full closure of northbound I-605 near SR-91. Traffic was diverted off South Street while crews worked at the scene, and some lanes were gradually reopened during the early morning hours.
The SigAlert was canceled at approximately 4:44 a.m., and the incident was closed shortly afterward.
The circumstances leading to the fatal crash remain under investigation.
