Bakersfield, CA – Four people were killed in a fiery head-on collision on State Route 58 in Bakersfield Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fatal crash was reported at approximately 10:26 a.m. on westbound SR-58 just east of Edison Road.
CHP said a Hyundai Tucson crossed over from the eastbound lanes into westbound traffic, where it collided head-on with a Toyota Corolla. Both vehicles were occupied and caught fire immediately after the impact.
Four people died in the collision. Authorities requested the Kern County Coroner’s Office to respond, but the identities of the victims had not been released.
The circumstances that caused the Hyundai to cross into opposing traffic remain under investigation. No arrests were reported in the initial CHP information.
The crash prompted a hard closure of westbound State Route 58 as Caltrans and CHP diverted traffic around the scene. Emergency crews also coordinated access for vehicles trapped within the closure.
