Richmond, CA – An elderly man was killed after being struck by a car in a hit-and-run crash in Richmond Sunday night, and police later arrested a 66-year-old man in connection with the fatal collision.
The deceased pedestrian has since been identified as 81-year-old Rafael Gutierrez Delgado.
The crash occurred at approximately 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the intersection of 23rd Street and Hellings Avenue.
Police said Rafael Delgado was crossing the roadway when he was struck by a car. The driver, a 66-year-old Richmond man, continued driving with Delgado on the hood until he was thrown from the vehicle, after which the driver fled the scene without stopping.
The vehicle believed to be connected to the crash was found abandoned in Richmond two days later.
After several days of investigation, Richmond police identified the Richmond resident as the alleged owner of the abandoned vehicle. The man was arrested on Sunday, August 30, as he was leaving an apartment in the 400 block of Fourth Street in Richmond.
The suspect was booked into the Contra Costa County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, vehicular manslaughter, and driving with a suspended license.
The fatal Richmond hit-and-run crash remains under investigation.
